Satellite map of global ozone
Satellite map of global ozone on October 2, 1987, showing the severe depletion or " hole" in the ozone layer over Antarctica. The hole is probably due to pollution of the atmosphere by chlorofluor- ocarbons (CFCs). First seen in 1980, the " hole" has grown in severity. It reaches a maximum in October, the Antarctic spring. It is visible here as the pink & white area covering the south polar latitudes (bottom). The colours represent Dobson units, a measure of atmospheric ozone; blue, yellow & red represent increasing concentration of ozone. The map was made from data obtained by the Nimbus-7 weather satellite

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a satellite map of global ozone on October 2,1987, shedding light on the alarming depletion or "hole" in the ozone layer over Antarctica. The profound deterioration of this protective shield is believed to be primarily caused by pollution in the form of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) released into the atmosphere. Initially observed in 1980, this ominous "hole" has progressively intensified over time and reaches its peak severity during October, coinciding with the Antarctic spring. The image vividly portrays this environmental crisis as a striking pink and white area enveloping the southern polar latitudes at the bottom. The colors employed represent Dobson units - a metric used to measure atmospheric ozone concentration. As we move from blue to yellow and ultimately red hues, they symbolize an escalating level of ozone density. It is worth noting that this comprehensive map was meticulously constructed using data acquired by the Nimbus-7 weather satellite. Its significance lies not only in capturing our attention but also serving as a stark reminder of humanity's impact on our planet's delicate ecosystems. This awe-inspiring photograph originates from Science Photo Library and delves into crucial subjects such as atmosphere, pollution, Antarctic geography, earth science, ozone hole phenomenon, ozone depletion research within scientific disciplines. Let us reflect upon it as a call for collective action towards preserving our fragile environment rather than focusing solely on commercial interests
