Sir Richard Owen, caricature

Sir Richard Owen (1804-1892). Caricature of the English anatomist and palaeontologist Richard Owen, showing him with a large forehead and jaw, and bushy hair. Owen founded the Natural History Museum in South Kensington, London, in 1881. He coined the name dinosaur in 1841, while reconstructing fossil reptiles, including those brought back from South America by Charles Darwin. He was opposed to Darwinism, as he felt that natural selection was not sufficient to explain evolution. While working on fossils he postulated that animals within a major group, were variations on a single theme or archetype. Owen also made contributions to taxonomy and the understanding of the evolution of marsupials and flightless birds

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white caricature print captures the essence of Sir Richard Owen, a prominent English anatomist and paleontologist of the 19th century. With his distinctive large forehead, jaw, and bushy hair, Owen's comical portrayal adds a touch of humor to this historical artwork. Renowned for his contributions to the field of zoology, Owen founded the prestigious Natural History Museum in South Kensington, London in 1881. His significant achievements include coining the term "dinosaur" while reconstructing fossil reptiles brought back from South America by Charles Darwin. Despite his collaboration with Darwin on scientific expeditions, Owen held opposing views on evolution. He believed that natural selection alone was insufficient to explain it. Instead, he postulated that animals within a major group were variations on a single theme or archetype. Beyond taxonomy and evolutionary biology, Owen also made notable discoveries concerning marsupials and flightless birds. Knighted for his exceptional work in anatomy and paleontology, he left an indelible mark on both scientific societies and British history. This illustration serves as a reminder of Sir Richard Owen's immense contributions to our understanding of nature's wonders. It is an artistic homage to one of England's most influential scientists whose legacy continues through ongoing research at the Natural History Museum he established.
