SOFIA telescope model C016 / 6359
SOFIA telescope model. SOFIA is the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. It is a 2.5-metre infrared telescope that is flown in its 747SP aircraft to the stratosphere, some 10-50 kilometres above sea level. This allows the detection of infrared light that is normally blocked by water vapour lower in the atmosphere. Observations also occur in the sub-millimetre wavelength range. SOFIA is a joint project of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and NASA. It is operated by the Deutsches SOFIA Institut (DSI) at the University of Stuttgart. The first observations took place in May 2010

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive SOFIA telescope model C016 / 6359, a technological marvel in the field of astronomy. The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is an extraordinary 2.5-meter infrared telescope that defies convention by being flown aboard a specially modified Boeing 747SP aircraft to reach the stratosphere, soaring between 10 and 50 kilometers above sea level. Engineered through a collaborative effort between the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and NASA, this groundbreaking observatory allows scientists to detect infrared light that would typically be obstructed by water vapor lower in Earth's atmosphere. Additionally, SOFIA conducts observations within the sub-millimeter wavelength range, unveiling new insights into astrophysical phenomena. In this photograph, an adult male researcher stands proudly beside the intricately detailed model of SOFIA. His presence symbolizes human ingenuity and dedication to unraveling the mysteries of our universe. As he gazes upon this remarkable display of engineering prowess, one can only imagine his excitement at being part of such cutting-edge astronomical research. The significance of SOFIA cannot be overstated; it represents a monumental leap forward in our understanding of astrophysics. Since its first observations in May 2010 under the operation of Deutsches SOFIA Institut (DSI) at the University of Stuttgart, this innovative instrument has been instrumental in expanding our knowledge beyond what was previously thought possible. As we venture further into the twenty-first century, technologies like SOFIA continue to push boundaries and inspire future generations to explore uncharted territories within our vast cosmos.
