Soursop seeds. 16th century woodcut illustration of the seeds of the guanabanus or soursop (Guanabanus muricatus (L.)) strung into a necklace. The soursop is a broadleaf evergreen tree native to tropical regions. In many areas it is grown as a commercial crop, having a white pulp that is said to be a combination of strawberry, pineapple with a citrus edge. The large dark seeds are inedible. This illustration comes from Aromatum et simplicium aliquot medicamentorum apud Indos nascientium historia by Garcia de Orta, published at Antwerp in 1574

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a unique piece of history - a necklace made from soursop seeds. The 16th-century woodcut illustration captures the beauty and intricacy of this tribal adornment, created by stringing together the large dark seeds of the guanabanus or soursop tree. The soursop, an evergreen tree native to tropical regions, is not only known for its decorative value but also for its delicious fruit. Its white pulp is said to possess a delightful blend of strawberry, pineapple, and citrus flavors. However, it's important to note that these particular seeds are inedible. The monochrome drawing transports us back in time to when this botanical wonder was documented in Aromatum et simplicium aliquot medicamentorum apud Indos nascientium historia by Garcia de Orta. Published in Antwerp in 1574, this illustration serves as a testament to mankind's fascination with nature's treasures. Todd-White Art Photography has skillfully captured the essence of this historic artifact through their lens. The vertical composition allows us to appreciate every detail of the necklace while emphasizing its significance as both decoration and symbol within tribal cultures. Intriguingly timeless and culturally rich, this print invites us into a world where natural resources were cherished not only for their practical uses but also for their aesthetic appeal.
