Spectrum of light experiment, 1889 C013 / 8772
Spectrum of light experiment. 19th-century artwork showing a method of obtaining a spectrum of colours from sunlight. A beam of light allowed in through a shutter is falling on a bowl of water in which a mirror has been placed at an angle of around 60 degrees. The light passes through the water, reflects off the mirror, and is dispersed as it passes back out through the water. Different colours of light refract more than others, producing a spectrum of colours (displayed on wall at left) like that seen in a rainbow. Artwork from the 4th volume (second period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork showcases a fascinating experiment known as the "Spectrum of Light". Created in 1889, this print from the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree offers a glimpse into the world of optical exploration. The illustration depicts a method used to obtain a spectrum of colors from sunlight. In this intriguing demonstration, a beam of light enters through an adjustable shutter and falls upon a bowl filled with water. Placed at an angle of approximately 60 degrees within the water is a mirror. As the light passes through the liquid medium, it reflects off the mirror and disperses back out through the water. The result is truly mesmerizing - different colors refract at varying degrees, producing a stunning spectrum akin to that seen in nature's own masterpiece, the rainbow. The vibrant range of hues can be observed on the wall situated to our left. This historical artwork not only serves as an aesthetic addition to any living room or educational space but also provides insight into scientific discoveries made during that era. It represents an era when knowledge was disseminated through popular science magazines like La Science Illustree. As we admire this monochrome print capturing such an enlightening experiment, we are reminded of how far our understanding has come since Louis Figuier first introduced us to these principles over 130 years ago.
