Steamer Oneida in the Altlantic, 1868 C013 / 7747

Steamer Oneida in the Atlantic. 19th-century artwork of the voyage undertaken in 1868 by the claimant to the fortune and baronetcy of Roger Tichbourne, missing presumed dead after a shipwreck off Brazil in 1854. In 1866, an Australian claiming to be Tichbourne was accepted by his mother, who died in March 1868. The claimant and advisers travelled in September 1868 to Brazil to attempt to prove his claim, contested by the rest of the family. By 1874, the claimant (an Arthur Orton) had been convicted of perjury and imprisoned. Lithograph from volume 3 (1877) of the 9-volume The Trial at Bar of Sir Roger C. D. Tichborne (1875-1880)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Steamer Oneida in the Atlantic, 1868" takes us back to a significant moment in history. Depicting a 19th-century artwork, it portrays the voyage undertaken by the claimant to the fortune and baronetcy of Roger Tichbourne. The story behind this image is one of mystery, fraud, and legal battles. In 1854, Roger Tichbourne went missing presumed dead after a shipwreck off Brazil. However, in 1866 an Australian claiming to be Tichbourne emerged and was accepted by his mother before her death in March 1868. To prove his claim against contestation from the rest of the family, the claimant and his advisers embarked on a journey to Brazil in September 1868. The steamer Oneida seen battling rough seas symbolizes both hope and trepidation as they sought evidence for their case. Ultimately, this elaborate scheme orchestrated by Arthur Orton (the imposter) ended with his conviction for perjury and imprisonment by 1874. This lithograph from volume three of "The Trial at Bar of Sir Roger C. D. Tichborne" (1875-1880) captures not only a maritime scene but also reflects sociological aspects such as fraudulent behavior within society during that time period. As we gaze upon this historical artwork filled with waves crashing against the vessel's hull amidst stormy weather conditions, we are reminded of how technology has advanced since then while appreciating its significance within transportation history. This image serves as a reminder that truth will always prevail over deceitful attempts to alter one's destiny or inheritance.
