Streptococcus grouping test C013 / 8758
Streptococcus grouping test. This is the Streptocard acid latex test, used to identify serotypes (subtypes) of beta-haemolytic Streptococcus bacteria. This test identifies serotypes A, B, C, D, F and G, the medically most important serotypes. The serotypes are characterised by the type of carbohydrate found on the bacterial cell wall. Each bottle contains a solution of latex particles with the antibody for one of the carbohydrates attached. A sample of the bacteria is mixed with each solution in the relevant circle on the card. The correct combination of antibody and antigen (carbohydrate) causes agglutination (clumping). Identification of the serotype is important for correct treatment

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Streptococcus grouping test C013/8758, a vital tool in identifying serotypes of beta-haemolytic Streptococcus bacteria. The Streptocard acid latex test depicted here is specifically designed to identify the medically significant serotypes A, B, C, D, F, and G. These serotypes are distinguished by the unique carbohydrates present on their cell walls. In this image, we see a white background that accentuates the meticulously arranged elements of this scientific experiment. The studio shot captures an individual expertly conducting the test with utmost precision and care. This person represents the dedicated professionals working tirelessly in laboratories to ensure accurate identification for effective treatment. The testing process involves mixing samples of bacteria with different solutions contained within each circle on the card. Each solution consists of latex particles attached to specific antibodies targeting one carbohydrate type. When there is a perfect match between antibody and antigen (carbohydrate), agglutination occurs - resulting in clumping. Accurate identification of these streptococcus serotypes holds immense importance as it directly impacts appropriate treatment strategies. This photograph not only highlights the intricate biochemical equipment utilized but also emphasizes how crucial laboratory work is in understanding and combating bacterial infections effectively. Overall, this visually striking image from Mauro Fermariello's collection at Science Photo Library encapsulates both the artistry and significance behind microbiological research aimed at improving medical practices worldwide.
