Terraformed Mars, artwork
Waning gibbous Moon. Image 19 of 27. Optical image of a waning (decreasing in apparent size) gibbous Moon 19 days into its 28-day cycle. The lunar phases arise as the Moons orbit of the Earth shows the Earth-facing side moving into and out of the light of the Sun. This Earth-facing side of the Moon is locked in place by the gravitational influence of the Earth. This results in a lunar day that equals the length of the lunar Earth orbit. On a waning Moon the day-night line (terminator) marks the lunar sunset. The Moon is gibbous when it is more than half full. Taken in October 2001. A sequence of the monthly cycle of Moon phases is shown on images R340/644-670

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Terraformed Mars" showcases the breathtaking artwork of Detlev van Ravenswaay. Against a black background, we are transported to a future where humanity has successfully transformed and colonized the red planet. The image features a waning gibbous Moon, 19 days into its 28-day cycle, serving as a reminder of our Earthly origins. The optical image beautifully captures the lunar phases that occur as the Moon orbits around our planet. As it moves in and out of the Sun's light, we witness the Earth-facing side transitioning from day to night. Locked in place by Earth's gravitational pull, this phenomenon results in a lunar day equaling the length of an Earth orbit. With its altered surface and modified atmosphere, Mars becomes an awe-inspiring testament to human ingenuity and scientific progress. This illustration hints at planetary engineering and terraformation techniques employed to make Mars habitable for future generations. As we gaze upon this thought-provoking artwork, notions of climate change, global warming, and ecological processes come to mind. It sparks curiosity about space missions yet unseen - journeys that may hold both excitement and uncertainty. Detlev van Ravenswaay's "Terraformed Mars" invites us on an imaginative voyage through time and space while reminding us of our responsibility towards preserving our own fragile biosphere here on Earth.
