Thames Barrier at dusk
Thames Barrier at dusk. Opened in 1984, this flood barrier was built between Newham and Greenwich, across the Woolwich Reach section of the River Thames, London, UK. It took eight years to complete. The barrier consists of ten moveable D-shaped gates supported by nine concrete piers, each containing the hydraulic machinery which lifts the gates into position. When not in use, the gates rest in concrete sills on the bed of the river, causing no hindrance to river traffic. This view is from the southern bank, of the western side of the barrier

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the majestic Thames Barrier at dusk, a true engineering marvel in the heart of London, UK. Opened in 1984 after eight years of construction, this flood barrier spans across the Woolwich Reach section of the River Thames, connecting Newham and Greenwich. The barrier consists of ten impressive moveable D-shaped gates supported by nine concrete piers, each housing hydraulic machinery that effortlessly lifts the gates into position when needed. What makes this structure even more remarkable is its minimal disruption to river traffic. When not actively protecting against flooding, these massive gates rest peacefully on concrete sills at the riverbed. As night falls over London's skyline, the Thames Barrier illuminates with a captivating glow that showcases both technological prowess and environmental consciousness. From this vantage point on the southern bank, we witness a breathtaking view of one side of this grand barrier. Its lights shimmering against the twilight sky create an enchanting ambiance that highlights British ingenuity and excellence in civil engineering. This print from Science Photo Library perfectly encapsulates how human innovation can seamlessly blend with nature to protect our cities from potential disasters while maintaining harmony with our surroundings. It serves as a testament to mankind's ability to conquer challenges and build structures that stand tall for generations to come.
