Thin-film thermocouple C016 / 6483
Thin-film thermocouple. Thermocouples, used for temperature measurements, are based on the thermoelectric effect between two metals. Thin-film versions (TFTs) are used to measure temperature rises due to the absorption of ultrasound. The TFT is deposited on a thin circular membrane with a diameter of around 50 millimetres. The holding frame is around 85 millimetres across. The overall thickness of the frame is less than 5 millimetres. One junction of the thermocouple is in the centre of the membrane, while the other is near the edge of the frame. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Thin-film thermocouple C016 / 6483, an advanced device used for temperature measurements. Based on the thermoelectric effect between two metals, this particular thin-film version (TFT) is specifically designed to measure temperature rises resulting from ultrasound absorption. The TFT is delicately deposited on a thin circular membrane with a diameter of approximately 50 millimeters, while the holding frame spans around 85 millimeters in width and has an overall thickness of less than 5 millimeters. The photograph beautifully captures the intricate details of this technological marvel at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, UK. With its vibrant blue background accentuating its sleek design, the image highlights both the precision and elegance of this measuring instrument. Notably, one junction of the thermocouple lies at the center of the membrane, while another rests near the edge of the frame. This strategic placement ensures accurate temperature readings across various applications. With its high-frequency capabilities and ability to detect ultrasonic temperature rises, this thin-film thermocouple represents cutting-edge advancements in metrology and physics research. Andrew Brookes skillfully captured this still life image that not only celebrates British engineering but also embodies scientific innovation in our modern era.
