Thomas Carlyle, Scottish writer
Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), Scottish writer, essayist, historian, teacher and social commentator. Carlyle was raised as a strict Calvinist. He married Jane Baillie Welsh in 1826 and subsequently moved to London where he became a social commentator and a leading figure in Victorian society. He initially established himself as an expert on German literature. His major works included The Life of Friedrich Schiller (1825), The French Revolution (1837), Sartor Resartus (1838), Chartism (1840), Past and Present (1843), and the 6-volume History of Friedrich II of Prussia: Called Fredrick the Great (1858-65).
