Thyroiditis
Thyroiditis (Hashimotos disease). Light micrograph of a section through a thyroid gland with the autoimmune disorder Hashimotos disease. The thyroid is an endocrine gland found in the neck, responsible for the production of hormones controlling the bodys metabolism. At right is part of a germinal centre, an area of tissue, usually found in lymph nodes, where cells of the immune system rapidly divide. The white blood cells produced in the germinal centre attack the thyroid gland, causing hypothyroidism (lowered thyroid function). Treatment involves the use of levothyroxine, a synthetic thyroid hormone. Magnification: x570 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a magnified view of Thyroiditis, specifically Hashimoto's disease. The image reveals a section through the thyroid gland affected by this autoimmune disorder. Located in the neck, the thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating the body's metabolism by producing hormones. Highlighted on the right side of the image is an intriguing germinal center, typically found in lymph nodes, where immune system cells rapidly divide. Unfortunately, these white blood cells produced within the germinal center launch an attack on the thyroid gland itself. This relentless assault leads to hypothyroidism or lowered thyroid function. To combat this condition and restore balance to hormone production, medical treatment involves administering levothyroxine—a synthetic form of thyroid hormone. By introducing this medication into patients' systems, it compensates for their diminished natural hormone levels. The enlarged and pink-stained sectioned tissue seen here provides valuable insights into histopathology—the study of diseased tissues—allowing scientists and medical professionals to better understand inflammation within the thyroid gland caused by Hashimoto's disease. With its intricate details captured under a light microscope at 570 times magnification when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this print serves as both an educational tool and a testament to scientific advancement in understanding autoimmune diseases like Thyroiditis (Hashimoto's disease).
