Vacuum flask by Dewar, 1892 C016 / 3686

Dewar flask. Variation on an early design of vacuum flask made by James Dewar in 1892. This consists of two glass flasks, one inside the other, that are joined at the top. The space between the flasks is evacuated of air. This drastically reduces heat transport by convection or conduction. Dewar used this design in his experiments on the magnetic properties of liquid oxygen. This object is preserved at the Royal Institution, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable invention from the late 19th century - the Vacuum flask by Dewar, dating back to 1892. A true marvel of scientific ingenuity, this particular variation on an early design revolutionized heat insulation and transport. The photograph captures two glass flasks seamlessly joined at the top, with the space between them completely devoid of air. This ingenious vacuum eliminates heat transfer through convection or conduction, making it a groundbreaking thermal insulator. Originally crafted by James Dewar for his experiments on liquid oxygen's magnetic properties, this historic artifact now finds its home at the esteemed Royal Institution in London. It stands as a testament to Dewar's pioneering work in cryogenics during that era. With its sleek design and advanced functionality, this vacuum flask represents more than just an item of historical significance; it symbolizes mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge and innovation. Its impact extends far beyond laboratory walls into various fields where temperature control is crucial. As we gaze upon this extraordinary piece preserved within the institution's exhibition halls, we are reminded of how science has shaped our world today. From keeping beverages piping hot or refreshingly cold to enabling breakthroughs in cryogenic research, Dewar's flask continues to inspire awe and appreciation for those who encounter it.
