William Gilbert 1544-1603

William Gilbert, English physician and physicist shown with his book De Magnete, Magneticisique Corporibus, et de Magno Magnete Tellure (On the Magnet and Magnetic Bodies, and on the Great Magnet the Earth). Published in 1600 it was a pioneering study in magnetism, which established his reputation as a physicist. One of Gilberts great contributions was to suggest that the Earth was a large magnetic sphere & that a compass needle points not to the heavens, but to the magnetic poles on the earth. He also studied static electricity using amber. Many regard him as " the father of modern electricity" and Galileo considered him to be the founder of experimentalism. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed figure of William Gilbert, a remarkable English physician and physicist who left an indelible mark on the world of science. In this portrait, he is depicted alongside his groundbreaking book "De Magnete, Magneticisique Corporibus, et de Magno Magnete Tellure" (On the Magnet and Magnetic Bodies, and on the Great Magnet the Earth), published in 1600. This seminal work propelled him to great acclaim as it delved into uncharted territories of magnetism. Gilbert's pioneering study revolutionized our understanding of magnetism by proposing that our planet itself is a colossal magnetic sphere. He astutely observed that compass needles do not point towards celestial bodies but instead align with Earth's magnetic poles. Moreover, he ventured into studying static electricity using amber, further solidifying his reputation as "the father of modern electricity". His contributions extended beyond scientific theories; Gilbert served as Queen Elizabeth I's personal physician during his illustrious career. Galileo himself regarded Gilbert as the founder of experimentalism—a testament to his profound impact on scientific methodology. This mesmerizing portrait encapsulates both Gilbert's intellectual prowess and unwavering dedication to unraveling nature's mysteries. It serves as a timeless reminder of how one individual can reshape our understanding of the world through their tireless pursuit of knowledge and innovation.
