XMM-Newton telescope
XMM-Newton telescope. Artwork of the XMM (X-ray Multi-Mirror)-Newton X-ray telescope in orbit above the Earth. This European Space Agency (ESA) satellite has three separate X-ray telescopes (large openings) which allow study of high-energy phenomena such as supernovae and black holes. Each of the X-ray telescopes contains 58 concentric mirrors, positioned so as to glance X-rays onto the detectors at the telescopes rear (upper right). The telescope has a highly elliptical orbit around Earth, reaching 114, 000 kilometres away at its furthest point. This allows it to observe from above Earths large radiation belts. XMM-Newton was launched on 10th December 1999

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the XMM-Newton telescope, a remarkable feat of scientific engineering and exploration. Suspended gracefully in orbit above our beautiful blue planet, this European Space Agency (ESA) satellite is a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about the mysteries of the universe. The XMM-Newton telescope boasts three distinct X-ray telescopes, each with 58 concentric mirrors meticulously positioned to capture elusive high-energy phenomena like supernovae and black holes. These large openings allow for an unprecedented study of celestial objects that emit powerful X-rays. Positioned at the upper right corner of this stunning print are detectors eagerly awaiting their encounter with these glancing X-rays. The elliptical orbit of the telescope takes it as far as 114,000 kilometers away from Earth, beyond the reach of its radiation belts. This strategic positioning enables unparalleled observations and data collection. Launched on December 10th, 1999, this astronomical satellite has since revolutionized our understanding of astrophysics through its groundbreaking discoveries. Its contributions have expanded our knowledge about distant cosmic events that shape our universe. In this breathtaking artwork captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of humanity's relentless pursuit to unravel the secrets hidden among stars but also how art can beautifully depict scientific achievements that push boundaries and inspire generations to dream bigger than ever before.
