Gay Meadow Stadium - Shrewsbury Town FC

Gay Meadow was the home ground of Shrewsbury Town football club in Shropshire, England. Just outside the town centre, on the banks of the River Severn, it opened in 1910.
The ground closed at the end of the 2006-07 Football League season and the club moved to a new stadium, provisionally titled The New Meadow, on the outskirts of the town.
Local legend says that over 22, 000 were inside the stadium for the league match against Wrexham A.F.C on 21 August 1950, although the official figure is given as 16, 000. The official record attendance is 18, 917, on 26 April 1961 against local rivals Walsall. Because it had only one entrance/exit road, in the years following the Taylor Report the capacity of the ground was reduced from 16, 000 to around 8, 000

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic Gay Meadow Stadium, once home to Shrewsbury Town FC in Shropshire, England. Nestled on the picturesque banks of the River Severn and just a stone's throw away from the town center, this iconic ground held its inaugural match in 1910. With a rich footballing legacy spanning nearly a century, Gay Meadow witnessed countless memorable moments. Local folklore suggests that an astonishing 22,000 passionate fans packed into its stands for a league clash against Wrexham A. F. C on August 21st, 1950 (although official records state it was closer to 16,000). The highest recorded attendance occurred on April 26th, 1961 when local rivals Walsall drew an impressive crowd of 18,917. However, due to safety regulations outlined in the Taylor Report and limited access through a single entrance/exit road, Gay Meadow underwent necessary capacity reductions over time. Eventually closing its doors at the conclusion of the thrilling 2006-07 Football League season. Preserved forever within this stunning art piece by Sports Stadia Art is not only a visual representation of Gay Meadow Stadium but also cherished memories etched deep within the hearts of Shrewsbury Town supporters. A testament to an era gone by and a reminder of how football has evolved throughout history.
