Wilderspool Stadium Going to the Match - Warrington Wolves Rugby League

Wilderspool Stadium was a rugby league stadium in Warrington, England. The ground was Warrington RLFC's old ground before moving to the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
In 1898, Warrington RLFC moved to the Wilderspool Stadium. A 10-year lease was agreed with Greenall Whitley for land on the east side of their previous ground, a pitch previously used by Latchford Rovers Rugby Club. Warrington's previous pitch was used to build houses in Fletcher Street.
Wilderspool Stadium was modernised and extended in the inter-war period, becoming one of the finest venues in rugby league, and being awarded host status for Championship finals, Challenge Cup semi-finals, and tour games. A new west perimeter wall and turnstiles were built at Wilderspool around 1921. In 1925 the supporters club provided Warrington with covered accommodation on the popular side of the ground and two years later, they donated a scoreboard. In 1926, the perimeter wooden fence being replaced by a concrete wall. New dressing rooms underneath the main stand were opened in January 1934.
Wilderspool's record attendance was created in the 1948-9 season when 34, 304 spectators turned up to see Warrington lose only their second game of the season to Wigan

Wilderspool Stadium - A Historic Rugby League Venue

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the essence of Wilderspool Stadium, a legendary rugby league ground located in Warrington, England. Steeped in history and cherished by fans, this stadium served as the home of Warrington RLFC before they moved to the Halliwell Jones Stadium. The story began in 1898 when Warrington RLFC made their way to Wilderspool Stadium after securing a 10-year lease with Greenall Whitley. The land on the east side was previously occupied by Latchford Rovers Rugby Club. Interestingly, their previous pitch transformed into residential houses on Fletcher Street. Over time, Wilderspool underwent modernization and expansion during the inter-war period, solidifying its reputation as one of rugby league's premier venues. It proudly hosted Championship finals, Challenge Cup semi-finals, and thrilling tour games that kept spectators on edge. Notable improvements included a new west perimeter wall and turnstiles built around 1921. The supporters club generously provided covered accommodation for fans on one side of the ground while also donating a scoreboard two years later. In January 1934, brand new dressing rooms were unveiled underneath the main stand. Wilderspool reached its pinnacle during the 1948-9 season when an astonishing crowd of 34,304 gathered to witness Warrington face off against rivals Wigan – only their second defeat that year. Although no longer standing today, this remarkable print immortalizes Wilderspool Stadium's rich heritage and enduring legacy within rugby league history.
