EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the Winter in the West publicity guide from 1933, a remarkable brochure designed by Leonard Cusden for the Great Western Railway (GWR). As one of their promotional campaigns during that era, GWR embraced strong stylized images to entice travelers towards winter holiday destinations. The influence of Art Deco designers is evident in this piece, as they were drawn to exotic imagery. The image transports us to a serene coastal setting with a pier stretching out into the sea. In the background stands an enchanting structure reminiscent of a Chinese pagoda, adding an intriguing touch of the Orient. The surrounding black trees create a striking contrast against the pale winter sky. Leonard Cusden's artistic vision shines through in this composition, capturing both elegance and mystery. Through his skillful design, he successfully conveys a sense of adventure and allure that would have undoubtedly attracted potential tourists seeking unique experiences during those times. This print not only serves as a testament to GWR's innovative marketing strategies but also offers us glimpses into how travel brochures evolved during this period. It reminds us of an era when art played an integral role in enticing individuals to explore new horizons and embrace different cultures.
