Built in August 1929 by the Great Western Railway (GWR), this 4-6-0 locomotive was part of a large fleet of engines designed by the legendary engineer, Charles Collett. The Hall Class locomotives were known for their impressive performance and sleek design, which set a new standard for British railway locomotives in the late 1920s. With a top speed of 75 miles per hour, these engines were among the fastest in the GWR fleet. Peplow Hall, named after Peplow Hall Manor in Shropshire, was one of 288 Hall Class locomotives built between 1928 and 1932. The unlined livery seen in this photograph was the standard livery for the GWR during the interwar period, featuring a dark green base with yellow and black lining. The Hall Class locomotives saw service on a variety of routes across the GWR network, including express passenger trains and heavy freight services. They were known for their reliability and power, making them a favorite among railway staff and passengers alike. This photograph is a beautiful reminder of the golden age of steam rail travel and the iconic locomotives that made it possible.
