Drawing Office Cricket Team, 1934

This image shows the Cricket Team from the Drawing Office at Swindon Works. The dog being held at the front of the group was presumably the team mascot. Inter-company cricket matches in Swindon were played at both the GWR Park and the GWR sports ground on Shrivenham Road. (2nd right - George Ernest Langrish)

1930s 1934 Swindon Works

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1934, capturing a moment of camaraderie and sportsmanship within the Drawing Office Cricket Team at Swindon Works. The team members proudly pose together, exuding confidence and unity. However, it is impossible to overlook the adorable canine companion held affectionately in the front row - undoubtedly their beloved mascot. In those days, inter-company cricket matches were eagerly anticipated events in Swindon. Employees from various departments would gather at either the GWR Park or the GWR sports ground on Shrivenham Road to showcase their skills and engage in friendly competition. These matches not only provided an opportunity for employees to unwind but also fostered a sense of community among colleagues. Amongst this talented group stands George Ernest Langrish, positioned second from right. His presence adds a touch of individuality to this collective portrait as he confidently gazes into the camera lens. Preserved by STEAM Museum of the GWR, this image serves as a testament to both railway sport and life during the 1930s. It captures a moment frozen in time when cricket brought people together, transcending their roles within Swindon Works. As we admire this photograph today, we are reminded of how sports can unite individuals across generations while celebrating our shared history.
