GWRs Home Guard battalions on parade at Castle Bar Park in London, c. 1940
The Home Guard was originally known as the Local Defence Volunteers (LDV). The LDV was formed in May 1940, but in August 1940 the LDV changed its name to the Home Guard. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the heart of London during World War II. It showcases a remarkable sight - the GWR's Home Guard battalions on parade at Castle Bar Park in July 1943. In response to the looming threat of invasion from Germany, over 1 million men joined the Home Guard, originally known as the Local Defence Volunteers (LDV). The GWR, recognizing the need to protect their own property, formed their own official Home Guard battalions and platoons. The image captures a moment frozen in time; rows upon rows of dedicated volunteers standing tall with unwavering determination etched across their faces. Dressed in uniform, they proudly display their allegiance to both country and company. Castle Bar Park serves as an emblematic backdrop for this historic gathering. As one gazes upon this scene, it is impossible not to feel a sense of solidarity and resilience that defined Britain during those turbulent times. This print serves as a powerful reminder of ordinary individuals who stepped forward willingly to defend British shores against imminent danger. Their selflessness and commitment embody the spirit of unity that prevailed throughout World War II. Preserved by STEAM Museum of the GWR, this evocative image allows us to pay homage to these unsung heroes - members of the GWR's Home Guard battalions who stood ready day and night, protecting not only railway property but also contributing significantly towards safeguarding our nation's freedom.
