Military tanks loaded onto Crocodile G wagons, c. 1939

A train load of military tanks, loaded onto Crocodile G wagons, make their way through Acton, en-route to the Channel Ports, for shipment over seas. The movement of train loads such as this was challenging and often dangerous work for the driver and fireman, particularly during an air raid when this type of load would be a prime target for attack. However the work had to be done and the movement of munitions and military equipment became an everyday occurrence during the war years, particularly during the build up to D Day when the number of special government trains increased dramatically. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print takes us back to the tumultuous era of World War II. It showcases a remarkable sight - military tanks, loaded onto Crocodile G wagons, making their way through Acton in 1939. These powerful war machines were en-route to the Channel Ports, destined for shipment overseas. The image evokes a sense of urgency and determination as we witness the challenging and perilous task faced by the driver and fireman during this time. With air raids posing constant threats, transporting such valuable cargo made these train loads prime targets for enemy attacks. Yet amidst the dangers that loomed overhead, there was an unwavering commitment to get the job done. The movement of munitions and military equipment became an everyday occurrence during those war years. However, it was during the build-up to D Day when these special government trains saw a dramatic increase in numbers. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals who played vital roles behind-the-scenes in ensuring victory on foreign shores. It also pays tribute to Acton's significant contribution to this monumental effort. As we gaze upon this historical snapshot frozen in time, we are transported back to an era where bravery and resilience prevailed against all odds – forever etching its mark on our collective memory.
