Engine Shed Ilfracombe Southern Railway

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the 1950s with this photograph of Ilfracombe Engine Shed, a nostalgic gem from the STEAM Museum's collection. This charming view shows two Southern Railway locomotives, No. 1836 and No.375, parked proudly alongside the shed's rustic walls. Ilfracombe Engine Shed was an important hub for railway operations in North Devon, serving as a maintenance depot and storage facility for steam locomotives. The shed itself dates back to the late 19th century, with its distinctive architecture reflecting the region's rich industrial heritage. In this particular moment in time, captured on film around the mid-20th century, we see two iconic Southern Railway engines taking a break from their duties on the rails. No. 1836 is a Class N15 King class locomotive built in 1919, while No.375 is an M7 class tank engine constructed in 1922. This evocative image not only showcases these magnificent machines but also provides a glimpse into daily life at Ilfracombe Engine Shed during its heyday. The scene exudes warmth and tranquility, inviting us to step into a bygone era where steam power reigned supreme and railways played such an integral role in shaping our nation's history.
