EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR takes us back to the bustling Plymouth North Road Station in Devon during the 1950s. The station, which originally opened its doors in March 1877, had undergone significant expansions over the years. In 1908, new platforms were added to accommodate the growing number of passengers. During this particular period captured in the photograph, Plymouth North Road Station was undergoing extensive rebuilding works that would continue until 1962. Interestingly, it was also around this time that the station underwent a name change and became known simply as "Plymouth". This alteration reflected both its significance as a major transportation hub and its evolving role within the community. The image itself offers a glimpse into daily life at Plymouth North Road Station during this transformative era. Passengers can be seen scurrying about with their luggage while others patiently wait for their trains on one of the newly constructed platforms. The architecture exudes an air of grandeur and sophistication, showcasing both Victorian charm and modern design elements. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we are transported back to an era when train travel reigned supreme and stations like Plymouth North Road played a vital role in connecting people across vast distances. It serves as a reminder of our rich railway heritage and how these historic landmarks continue to shape our communities today.
