Artists concept of a Hot Jupiter orbiting a star named 51 Pegasi

In 1995 astronomers discovered a Hot Jupiter orbiting a star named 51 Pegasi, in the constellation of Pegasus. This planet was named Bellerophon. It orbits the star in just a few days. The closeness to the star makes the planet very hot. In fact it is so hot the planets atmosphere may be evaporating into space like a cometary tail. Another result of the vicinity is that the planet is tidally locked, meaning it always shows the same face to the star, just like our moon does to Earth.
It is a mystery why planets like 51 Pegasi b, or Hot Jupiters, are found so close to their stars. Some astronomers believe they have been created further out and then forced closer to the star, due to their orbit which slows them down

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork depicts an artist's concept of the fascinating phenomenon known as a Hot Jupiter orbiting a star named 51 Pegasi. In 1995, astronomers made a groundbreaking discovery when they found this gas giant, affectionately named Bellerophon, in the constellation of Pegasus. What makes this planet truly extraordinary is its incredibly close proximity to its star, resulting in scorching temperatures that could be causing its atmosphere to evaporate into space like a cometary tail. The image showcases the surreal beauty of this distant world and highlights how it is tidally locked, perpetually showing the same face to its parent star just like our moon does to Earth. Scientists remain puzzled as to why planets like 51 Pegasi b are found so near their stars. Some theories suggest that these hot Jupiters may have formed farther out and were subsequently forced closer due to gravitational interactions with other celestial bodies. Intriguingly, solar flares and stellar winds emanating from the nearby star create mesmerizing flares and eruptions on Bellerophon's surface. This digitally generated illustration offers us a glimpse into the mysteries of our universe while inspiring awe for both art enthusiasts and astronomy aficionados alike.
