EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a daring attempt by pirates to capture the largest Chinese warship, the Haichi. In a cunning plan, these 33 audacious pirates believed that they could easily overpower the crew while they were ashore on leave. Little did they know that their assumptions would be proven wrong. As fate would have it, the crew of the Haichi had not been granted any leave at that time. When news of the pirate attack reached them, alarm bells rang throughout the ship. The police swiftly intervened and charged towards the returning pirates as they made their way back to land after realizing their failed mission. The intensity of this historical moment is palpable in this monochrome photograph from June 25th, 1924. It serves as a reminder of how even seemingly invincible forces can be thwarted by unexpected circumstances and swift action. Preserved by Central News and now available through Europeana Photography, this image offers us a glimpse into an era where piracy still posed a threat to naval security. Though captured in black and white tones, its impact remains vividly etched in our minds—a testament to both human audacity and resilience against adversity.
