Helped by his 10 yesr old daughter Patricia, Mr Crome barricades the door of his

Helped by his 10 yesr old daughter Patricia, Mr Crome barricades the door of his bare three roomed home on the top floor of the London County Council rest centre at Paddington, West London, where the unemployed coalman, his wife and six children, are resisting eviction for a rest centre debt of some ?20.
Water and flour bombs have been prepared by the family of eight, to resist any attempt to dislodge them.
The family pay nearly ?5 a week for meals and accomadation, and owe the money as Mr Crome is unemployed. With the backing of neighbours the Cromes intend to hold out until the evicition order is withdrawn. The family have lived at the centre for two years while waiting for a house, and their only furnishings are Army beds deal tables and small, chest of drawers. The plaster walls are bare, and the light bulbs unshaded. Watching the siege preparations are 15 year old Joan, who holds baby Dorothy, aged 4 months. 9th August 1949

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this powerful print captured by General from TopFoto, we witness the resilience and determination of Mr. Crome as he barricades the door of his humble three-roomed home at the London County Council rest centre in Paddington, West London. Assisting him in this act of defiance is his 10-year-old daughter Patricia, a symbol of strength beyond her years. Facing eviction due to a debt of around £20 owed to the rest centre, Mr. Crome and his family refuse to surrender without a fight. Water and flour bombs have been prepared as their last line of defense against any attempt to dislodge them from their meager abode. Living on meager means with an unemployed father, Mrs. Crome and their six children pay nearly £5 per week for meals and accommodation at the center while waiting for a permanent house. Their living conditions are stark; army beds, deal tables, small chests of drawers are all they possess within bare plaster walls illuminated by unshaded light bulbs. As they prepare for what seems like an imminent eviction order, neighbors rally behind the Cromes in solidarity against injustice. This poignant image captures not only their struggle but also serves as a reminder that even amidst adversity, unity can be found within communities. This photograph stands as a testament to human spirit and perseverance during challenging times—a timeless portrayal that continues to resonate over seven decades later.
