Mr Joseph Arthur Walter Perkins, a 24 year old experimental chemist, left his home
Mr Joseph Arthur Walter Perkins, a 24 year old experimental chemist, left his home in Erith, Kent to ride across Europe and the Sahara by motorcycle to Cape Town. This will be the first time ever if he succeeds. He is equipped with all sorts of equipment, from binoculars, revolver and rifle - to spare cans of oil and petrol and a specially built rear wheel to take the extra weight. His father saw him off.

In this photo print, we see Mr Joseph Arthur Walter Perkins, a daring 24-year-old experimental chemist, embarking on an unprecedented adventure. Leaving his home in Erith, Kent, he sets off on a remarkable journey across Europe and the treacherous Sahara Desert by motorcycle with one audacious goal - to reach Cape Town. If successful, this will mark the first-ever such feat accomplished. Equipped with an array of essential gear, Mr Perkins ensures no obstacle can hinder his quest for exploration. From binoculars to a revolver and rifle for protection against potential dangers along the way, he is prepared for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise during his arduous expedition. Notably, his specially built rear wheel accommodates the additional weight required for such an ambitious endeavor. As captured in this image dated 9th March 1950, we observe Mr Perkins astride his post-war 1950 350cc NH Ariel motorcycle – a true symbol of resilience after years of conflict. The attention to detail is striking; modifications like the snorkel attached to the exhaust pipe and an intake filter atop the fuel tank reveal ingenious adaptations made specifically for safe river crossings encountered during this extraordinary odyssey. With heartfelt farewells from his father echoing in their parting embrace, Mr Joseph Arthur Walter Perkins begins what promises to be an awe-inspiring chapter in human exploration. This photograph encapsulates both bravery and determination as it immortalizes a moment before history unfolds its secrets within each mile travers
