EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the Mogul Akbar period in 1590, showcasing a significant event from the Akbarnamah Manuscript. The image portrays the assassination of Bairam Khan beside the serene lake at Patan, Baroda in 1561. Created by Tulsi the Elder with intricate outlines and brought to life by Tiriya's skilled painting techniques, this artwork captures a pivotal moment in history. Bairam Khan played a crucial role as the prime minister of Akbar and was instrumental in establishing the mighty Moghul Empire. He fearlessly conquered numerous provinces on behalf of young Akbar during his minority. However, as time passed and Akbar reached adulthood, he decided to dismiss Bairam Khan from his esteemed position. Forced into exile, Bairam Khan embarked on a pilgrimage to Makkah but tragically met his demise at the hands of Lohani – seeking revenge for his father who had been slain by Bairam Khan himself. This dramatic scene unfolds before our eyes through this remarkable piece of Islamic art. The composition showcases intense battle scenes with warriors mounted on horses engaged in fierce combat. It serves as a powerful reminder of warfare events that shaped history while also highlighting Vadodara's significance during that era.
