France: Advertisement for Sandales Gouik featuring a Pelote Basque player, c. 1925

Basque pelota (pilota in the original Basque language also pelota vasca in Spanish, pelote basque in French) is the name for a variety of court sports played with a ball using ones hand, a racket, a wooden bat or a basket, against a wall (frontis or Fronton) or, more traditionally, with two teams face to face separated by a line on the ground or a net. The roots of this class of games can be traced to the Greek and other ancient cultures.

The term pelota probably comes from the Vulgar Latin term pilotta (ball game). It is a diminutive form of the word pila which may relate to a hard linen or leather ball filled with pilus (fur or hair) or to the Latin words for strike or spade and is related to the English word pellet.

Today, Basque pelota is played in several countries. In Europe, this sport is concentrated in Spain and France, especially in the Basque Country. The sport is also played in Latin American countries such as Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Cuba. Operated as a gaming enterprise called Jai Alai, it is seen in parts of the U.S. such as Florida, Connecticut, Nevada, and Rhode Island, as well as in the Philippines

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to France in the year 1925, where an advertisement for Sandales Gouik featuring a Pelote Basque player is on display. The image showcases the rich cultural heritage of Basque pelota, a variety of court sports played with different equipment against a wall or face-to-face with teams separated by a line or net. The roots of this ancient game can be traced back to Greek and other ancient civilizations, making it a truly timeless sport. The term "pelota" likely originated from the Vulgar Latin word "pilotta" meaning ball game. It is believed to be derived from the Latin words for strike or spade, possibly referring to the action involved in playing this thrilling sport. Basque pelota continues to thrive today, not only in Spain and France but also in countries like Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Cuba, and even parts of the United States such as Florida and Connecticut. In some regions like the Philippines, it operates as a gaming enterprise known as Jai Alai. This remarkable print captures both the historical significance and enduring popularity of Basque pelota. It serves as a reminder that sports have always been an integral part of human culture across time and borders - bringing people together through competition and camaraderie.
