Libya / Italy: Advertising poster for the Fiera de Tripoli (Tripoli Fair), 1930
From 1912 to 1927, the territory of Libya was known as Italian North Africa. From 1927 to 1934, the territory was split into two colonies, Italian Cyrenaica and Italian Tripolitania, run by Italian governors. Some 150, 000 Italians settled in Libya, constituting roughly 20% of the total population. In 1934, Italy adopted the name Libya (used by the Ancient Greeks for all of North Africa, except Egypt) as the official name of the colony made up of the three provinces of Cyrenaica, Tripolitania and Fezzan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an advertising poster for the Fiera de Tripoli (Tripoli Fair) in 1930, during the era when Libya was known as Italian North Africa. The territory of Libya underwent various transformations under Italian rule, with two separate colonies established between 1927 and 1934: Italian Cyrenaica and Italian Tripolitania. Governed by Italians, these regions attracted a significant number of settlers, with around 150,000 Italians making up approximately 20% of the total population. Italy's influence is evident in this remarkable poster art that exudes style and fashion. Designed to promote the fair, it reflects both graphic design trends of the time and serves as a piece of propaganda. The vibrant colors and intricate details capture attention while conveying a sense of excitement surrounding this cultural event. The adoption of "Libya" as the official name for this colony further solidified its place on the map. Interestingly, this name had been used by Ancient Greeks to refer to all of North Africa except Egypt. This historical context adds depth to our understanding of Libya's rich heritage. This image not only offers insight into Italy's colonial past but also provides a glimpse into African tourism during that period. It reminds us how history intertwines different cultures across continents like Asia and Africa.
