USA: Keep Him Free. First World War propaganda poster, Philadelphia, c. 1918

World War I (WWI or WW1 or World War One), also known as the First World War or the Great War, was a global war centred in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. More than 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians died as a result of the war, a casualty rate exacerbated by the belligerents technological and industrial sophistication, and tactical stalemate. It was one of the deadliest conflicts in history, paving the way for major political changes, including revolutions in many of the nations involved.

The war drew in all the worlds economic great powers, which were assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies (based on the Triple Entente of the United Kingdom, France and the Russian Empire) and the Central Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary. Although Italy had also been a member of the Triple Alliance alongside Germany and Austria-Hungary, it did not join the Central Powers, as Austria-Hungary had taken the offensive against the terms of the alliance.

These alliances were reorganised and expanded as more nations entered the war: Italy, Japan and the United States joined the Allies, and the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria the Central Powers. Ultimately, more than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilised in one of the largest wars in history

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a powerful piece of propaganda from the First World War era. Titled "USA: Keep Him Free" this poster was displayed in Philadelphia around 1918, during the height of the war. The image serves as a reminder of the immense sacrifices made by soldiers and civilians alike during this global conflict. The First World War, also known as the Great War, was a devastating event that claimed the lives of over 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians. The casualty rate was exacerbated by technological advancements and tactical stalemates on various fronts. This conflict reshaped political landscapes across nations and led to revolutions in many countries involved. The war drew in economic powerhouses from around the world, forming two opposing alliances: the Allies (United Kingdom, France, and Russia) and Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary). Italy initially belonged to Germany's alliance but did not join their offensive against Austria-Hungary. As more nations entered the war, these alliances were reorganized and expanded. With over 70 million military personnel mobilized worldwide, including 60 million Europeans alone, this became one of history's largest wars. The United States joined forces with Japan and Italy to support the Allies' cause against Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. This print is a poignant reminder of an era marked by sacrifice for freedom. It stands as a testament to those who fought bravely on behalf of their countries during this tumultuous period in history.
