EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases John Alexander Macdonald, a prominent Canadian statesman who left an indelible mark on the nation's history. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1815, Macdonald embarked on a transformative journey when he emigrated to Canada with his family at the tender age of five in 1820. Little did anyone know that this young boy would go on to become the first Prime Minister of Canada. Serving as Prime Minister from 1867 to 1873 and again from 1878 until his death in 1891, Macdonald played a pivotal role in shaping the destiny of Canada during its early years as a confederation. His leadership was marked by determination and vision, guiding the country through significant milestones and challenges. The tinted lithograph featured here is part of The Modern Portrait Gallery collection from London dating back to around 1880. It beautifully captures Macdonald's distinguished appearance and charismatic aura. This portrait not only pays homage to his political achievements but also serves as a reminder of his Scottish heritage. Macdonald's legacy extends beyond politics; he was instrumental in laying down the foundations for modern-day Canada while grappling with issues such as colonialism and national identity. This image encapsulates both his personal journey and his profound impact on Canadian society—a testament to one man's unwavering dedication towards building a prosperous nation.
