EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from Mozart's beloved opera, The Marriage of Figaro. Set in Vienna's Burgtheater on 1 May 1786, this comic opera (opera buffa) with a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte after Beaumarchais comes to life before our eyes. In this particular moment, Susanna, the maid to Countess Almaviva, can be seen urgently telling the mischievous page Cherubino to leave as they hear voices approaching. However, instead of obeying her command and making his exit gracefully, Cherubino decides to hide in a chair covered by an elegant drape. Little does he know that his hiding spot will not remain secret for long. As fate would have it, the Count himself stumbles upon Cherubino concealed within the chair and exposes him to everyone present. This comical twist adds an element of surprise and amusement to Mozart's masterful composition. The photograph is taken from A Day With Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by May Byron (London, c1914), offering us a glimpse into the vibrant world of music and theatre during Mozart's time. It serves as a testament to the enduring popularity of The Marriage of Figaro and its ability to captivate audiences across generations.
