EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured lithograph captures a lively scene in Rome, Italy during the early 19th century. The print showcases a group of enthusiastic youths engaging in a popular pastime known as Bumble Puppy, or Nine Holes near the Temple of Vesta. In this intriguing game, the young men meticulously cut nine holes into the lush turf, each large enough to accommodate a ball. The game involves an element of gambling and excitement. Players stake their money on their ability to pitch the ball accurately into one of these designated holes. Should they fail to do so, they lose their wager. However, if a player successfully pitches the ball into the center hole, they claim all the money staked and initiate a new round. Italian Scenery, Manners and Customs by Buon Airetti published this charming lithograph in London back in 1806. The vibrant colours bring life to this snapshot of youthful recreation amidst ancient Roman scenery. It is fascinating how games like Bumble Puppy have transcended time and continue to captivate people across generations. This image serves as both an artistic representation and historical documentation of leisure activities enjoyed by Italian youth centuries ago near one of Rome's most iconic landmarks – the Temple of Vesta.
