EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph from 1839 captures a significant moment in the history of ballooning. The image showcases Edward Spencer, an English lawyer known for his daring adventures alongside renowned balloonist Charles Green. Together, they embarked on numerous ascents that pushed the boundaries of human exploration and aeronautics. On that fateful day of July 24,1837, at Vauxhall Gardens in London, Green and Spencer prepared for another exhilarating journey into the skies. However, this particular ascent held more than just excitement; it also marked a tragic turn of events. Accompanying them was Robert Cocking, an amateur scientist and painter who sought to test his newly designed parachute. As the balloon reached an altitude of 5,000 feet (1,524 meters), Cocking bravely detached himself from the vessel to initiate his fatal parachute jump. Little did he know that this leap would end tragically for him. Despite this unfortunate accident befalling Cocking, it serves as a testament to the courage and determination displayed by these early pioneers of aviation. The lithograph itself is a remarkable piece of artistry capturing both the grandeur and danger associated with ballooning during that era. It stands as a historical record commemorating those brave individuals who fearlessly ventured into uncharted territories above our world's surface.
