EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Thomas Wolsey, a prominent figure in English history. Wolsey was not only an esteemed statesman but also a churchman who served as the Archbishop of York during his illustrious career. In 1515, he received the honorable title of Cardinal from the Pope and was appointed as Lord Chancellor of England by King Henry VIII on Christmas Eve that same year. However, Wolsey's fortunes took a turn for the worse when he fell out of favor with the king due to delays in divorce proceedings against Catherine of Aragon. This strained relationship ultimately led to his downfall. As fate would have it, while en route to London as a prisoner, Wolsey tragically passed away. The engraving featured here is taken from "The World's Great Men" published in London around 1870. It beautifully captures the essence and significance of this influential British figure within religion and politics during that era. Let this image serve as a reminder of Thomas Wolsey's remarkable journey – from being appointed Cardinal and Lord Chancellor to facing adversity and meeting an untimely demise. His story remains etched in history, symbolizing both triumphs and tribulations faced by those who hold power at such pivotal moments in time.
