COLDSTREAM BRIDGE, FROM UP-STREAM. Coldstream Bridge, linking Coldstream, Scottish

COLDSTREAM BRIDGE, FROM UP-STREAM. Coldstream Bridge, linking Coldstream, Scottish Borders with Cornhill-on-Tweed, Northumberland, is an 18th century Grade II* listed bridge between England and Scotland, across the River Tweed. A plaque on the bridge commemorates the 1787 visit of the poet Robert Burns to the Coldstream. Of historical note is the toll house on the Scottish side of the bridge, which became infamous for the runaway marriages that took place there, as at Gretna Green. It ceased to be a toll bridge in 1826. UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
COLDSTREAM BRIDGE, FROM UP-STREAM. This vintage print captures the timeless beauty and historical significance of Coldstream Bridge, a remarkable 18th-century Grade II* listed bridge that connects the Scottish town of Coldstream with Cornhill-on-Tweed in Northumberland, England. The engraved image showcases the architectural splendor of this cross-border masterpiece as it spans across the majestic River Tweed. Notably, this iconic bridge holds a place in history as it commemorates the visit of renowned poet Robert Burns to Coldstream in 1787. A plaque on its structure serves as a reminder of his presence and contribution to Scottish culture. Adding intrigue to its story is the toll house located on the Scottish side, which gained notoriety for hosting runaway marriages similar to those at Gretna Green. However, by 1826, this historic landmark ceased operating as a toll bridge. The engraving's illustrative technique and retro-styled design evoke a sense of nostalgia while capturing the essence of 19th-century artistry. Its intricate details transport viewers back in time, allowing them to appreciate both the engineering marvel and cultural significance embodied by Coldstream Bridge. This print from Universal Images Group (UIG) offers an enchanting glimpse into history—a visual testament to centuries-old connections between England and Scotland.
