EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing Fragments of a marble statue of Dionysus, discovered in the ancient Attic deme of Ikaria. The sheer scale of this colossal sculpture suggests that it served as a significant cult statue dedicated to the god himself. Recently, experts were able to reunite the head with its body, unveiling an awe-inspiring representation of Dionysus. The intricate details and craftsmanship evident in this artwork transport us back to 520-510 BC when it was created. Although uncertain, there is speculation about whether the right hand holding a kantharos belongs to this magnificent statue. Against a striking blue background, we are presented with fragments that have stood the test of time despite being damaged over centuries. This studio shot allows us to appreciate every fragment and marvel at how they once formed part of a larger whole. Dionysus, known as the Greek god associated with wine and revelry, is depicted here with great finesse. His regal hairstyle and divine features convey his status as one of Olympus' most revered deities. This photograph not only captures an exceptional piece from Ancient Greece's rich artistic heritage but also serves as a reminder that even fragmented masterpieces can still evoke wonder and admiration today.
