EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of ancient Greek art - the Grave stele from Tanagra in Boeotia. Crafted from Boeotian poros stone, this unique stele is one of the earliest known funerary monuments ever discovered. Erected by Amphalkes in memory of Dermys and Kitylos, as indicated by the inscription, it holds great historical significance. The image depicts two deceased youths, possibly brothers, tenderly embracing each other. Dermys stands on the left side while Kitylos stands on the right. Their naked figures symbolize vulnerability and evoke a sense of profound emotion. The cracked surface adds an intriguing element to this sculpture's story, hinting at its age and journey through time. Atop the stele would have originally sat a seated Sphinx, now lost to history but leaving behind traces of mystery and wonder. This addition would have further emphasized its connection to ancient Greek mythology. Dating back to the first quarter of the 6th century BC, this masterpiece offers us a glimpse into ancient Greece's artistic prowess and their reverence for honoring their departed loved ones. With its vertical composition and meticulous craftsmanship, this grave stele exemplifies human representation in art during that era.
