EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage postcard captures the interior view of a magnificent floatplane from the New York, Rio & Buenos Aires Line, Inc. dating back to around 1930. These colossal hydro boats were the largest commercial airplanes of their time, boasting an impressive wingspan of 100 feet and a total length of 62 feet. They extended 16 feet above ground level from the base to the wing. Equipped with twin Pratt and Whitney Hornet engines, each generating a powerful force of 575 horsepower, these hydro planes could reach a maximum speed of 130 miles per hour. Remarkably, they were capable of maintaining flight even with a full load using just one engine. The Commodore hydro boat featured in this print accommodated a crew of four individuals: pilot, co-pilot, mechanic, and radio operator. It was truly an engineering marvel that revolutionized air travel during its era. As we gaze at this image today, it serves as a testament to the ingenuity and advancements made in aviation history. The sheer size and power displayed by these massive floatplanes evoke awe and admiration for those who dared to explore new frontiers through the skies.
