Postcard of Yaz-Yah, A Navajo Girl. ca. 1924, Yaz-Yah, A Navajo Girl. When a traveler journeys to Hopiland in Arizona he crosses a portion of the Navajo reservation. There are some 16, 000 Indians on the reservation. Nowhere, however, are they gathered into anything like a village as are the Pueblo Indians or even in groups such as are found among other tribes in the Southwest. They wander here and there like true nomads. The great industry of the women is carding and spinning wool and weaving it into blankets. The men look after the flocks of sheep, and many are excellent silversmiths. Postcard No. H-2275

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage postcard captures the essence of Yaz-Yah, a Navajo girl from ca. 1924. As one embarks on a journey to Hopiland in Arizona, they traverse through a portion of the vast Navajo reservation, home to approximately 16,000 Native Americans. Unlike other tribes in the Southwest who gather in villages or groups, the Navajo people wander freely like true nomads. The women of this resilient community engage in carding and spinning wool with great industry, skillfully weaving it into beautiful blankets that showcase their craftsmanship and cultural heritage. Meanwhile, the men take charge of tending to flocks of sheep and demonstrate their expertise as exceptional silversmiths. Through this image captured by Postcard No. H-2275 from Universal Images Group (UIG), we catch a glimpse into the rich traditions and way of life embraced by Yaz-Yah and her fellow Navajos during an era when their culture thrived amidst adversity. Let this photograph serve as a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness exhibited by indigenous communities throughout history—a reminder that despite challenges faced over time, these vibrant cultures continue to endure with pride and grace.
