Living beside mighty Niagara, the peaceful tribe of the Ongiaras believed that its roar was the voice of the Great Spirit. Each year it was the custom to offer the fairest of their maidens as a sacrifice. The last of the maidens to be thus sacrificed was Lelawala, the daughter of Chief Eagle Eye who, after witnessing the sacrificial plunge over the Falls, joined his daughter in death after the same fashion. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Depiction of Maid of the Mist Legend" takes us back to the year 1941 and immerses us in the enchanting tale of the Ongiaras tribe. Living peacefully beside the mighty Niagara Falls, they believed that its thunderous roar was none other than the voice of the Great Spirit. The annual custom of offering their fairest maiden as a sacrifice haunted their existence. The last maiden to be chosen for this tragic fate was Lelawala, daughter of Chief Eagle Eye. As she took her plunge over the falls, her father could not bear to live without her and followed suit, joining his beloved daughter in death. Legend has it that Lelawala, forever known as the Maid of the Mist, along with her father now reside within a mystical crystal cave hidden behind these very waterfalls. This ethereal depiction captures our imagination and transports us into a world where spirits dwell amidst nature's grandeur. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing image from Universal Images Group (UIG), we can almost hear whispers carried by gentle breezes and feel an inexplicable connection with those who came before us. It serves as a poignant reminder that legends have shaped our understanding of history and continue to inspire awe in our hearts today.
