Capturing the Spirit of Tradition - A Glimpse into Guy Fawkes Celebrations in 1956

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print from the Chichester Photographic Collection takes us back to a time when community spirit and age-old traditions were cherished. In this snapshot, we witness the vibrant preparations for the much-anticipated Guy Fawkes celebrations on October 27th, 1956. A procession of around 200 individuals, proudly representing Bonfire Societies from Beeding and Bramber, Shoreham, Littlehampton, Patching, and Chichester itself, parades through the streets. Men clad in their finest attire can be seen diligently crafting torches that will soon illuminate the night sky. As they march along Market Avenue, South Street, East Street, the Hornet and Oving Road towards Florence Road playing field – their destination – anticipation fills the air. The atmosphere is electric as each member eagerly awaits their turn to throw their torch onto a towering bonfire. Once arrived at Florence Road playing field, these spirited participants joyfully dance around the roaring flames. Their faces illuminated by both firelight and sheer delight reflect a sense of unity that transcends time. This remarkable image encapsulates an era where tradition was treasured above all else; where communities came together to celebrate shared heritage with unbridled enthusiasm. It serves as a poignant reminder of our collective history and offers us an opportunity to appreciate how such customs have shaped our present-day festivities.
