Giuseppe Garibaldi was an Italian revolutionary and military leader who played a major role in the unification of Italy in the 19th century. He was born in Nice, France, but spent most of his life in Italy. He joined the Italian nationalist movement and fought for independence from Austria and other foreign powers. He led a successful military campaign against the Austrians and helped to create a unified Italian state. It also fought for freedom from Spanish rule in South America, where he became known as "the Hero of Two Worlds".
