Anna Dorothea Therbusch Collection

Anna Dorothea Therbusch (1721-1782) was a German Rococo painter and graphic artist. She is best known for her portraits, which often featured members of the Prussian court. She was born in Berlin and began her artistic training at the age of 13, studying with the court painter Antoine Pesne. In 1744, she married a fellow artist, Georg Melchior Kraus, and together they moved to Dresden where they worked together until his death in 1747. After that she returned to Berlin and continued to work as an independent artist until her death in 1782. Her works were highly regarded by both Frederick II of Prussia and Catherine II of Russia who both commissioned works from her. Her style is characterized by its delicate brushwork and subtle use of color which gives it a lightness that has made it popular with collectors today.
