The Disembarcation of Catarino Cornaro in Venice in 1489
EDITORS COMMENTS
captures a pivotal moment in the life of Catarina Cornaro, an extraordinary woman who defied convention and faced the challenges of exile with grace. Painted by Antonio Vassilacchi, this oil on canvas masterpiece now resides at the Museo Correr in Venice, Italy. Catarina Cornaro's story is one of resilience and strength. In 1472, she married King Jacques II of Cyprus and became Queen. However, tragedy struck when her son Jacques III passed away shortly after his father's death. This left Catarina as the sole ruler of Cyprus. In 1489, facing pressure from the Republic of Venice to relinquish her throne, Catarina made the difficult decision to leave Cyprus behind and embark on a new chapter in her life. The painting depicts her arrival in Venice aboard the magnificent Bucintoro (Bucentaur), a ceremonial vessel reserved for important state occasions. As she steps onto Venetian soil, we can sense both determination and vulnerability emanating from Catarina's gaze. Despite losing her kingdom and enduring political turmoil, she found solace in Asolo where she spent the rest of her days. Vassilacchi masterfully captures not only historical accuracy but also conveys emotions through his brushstrokes. This artwork serves as a testament to Catarina Cornaro's indomitable spirit and reminds us that even amidst adversity
