EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic figure of Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, affectionately known as Oom Paul. A prominent South African politician, Kruger played a significant role in the tumultuous 2nd Boer War (1899-1900). However, as depicted in this cartoon by Edward Linley Sambourne from Punch on September 12th, 1900, Kruger's advanced age and declining health prevented him from effectively engaging in guerrilla warfare against the British forces. In this engraving by Sambourne, we see a frail-looking Kruger seeking refuge in Holland to escape the ravages of war. The image reflects both his physical vulnerability and his determination to find safety amidst colonialism's grip on Africa. Despite being unable to actively participate in combat during this period, Oom Paul remains an enduring symbol of resistance against British imperialism. Bridgeman Images presents us with a historical artifact that not only showcases an important political figure but also provides insight into the complexities of warfare and its impact on individuals. This print serves as a reminder of Kruger's pivotal role in South African history while inviting contemplation about the consequences of old age and ill health during times of conflict.
