A tampion was originally any plug for sealing an aperture, but the word is now chiefly used to describe a bung placed in the muzzle of a gun to protect it from sea-water, rain, etc. Tampions have been used in the Navy for this purpose since about the fifteenth century, and in 1627 a Captain Smith wrote that "A Tomkin (as it was then called) is a round peece of Wood put into the Peeces mouth and covered with Tallow."
