This lithograph captures the cunning and deceitful act of Peisistratus, an Athenian democrat who sought to seize power in ancient Greece. In a calculated move to manipulate public opinion, Peisistratus staged his own injury by secretly wounding himself and appearing in public covered in blood. The image depicts the moment when he accused his political enemies of attacking him, using this fabricated incident to gain sympathy and support from the people.
Through this artful trick, Peisistratus was able to convince the Athenians to grant him a bodyguard for protection. However, he slyly increased the size of his guard until he had amassed enough power to declare himself tyrant of Athens in 570 BC. This historical event is brought vividly to life through the detailed illustration by Robert Ambrose Dudley.
